Select a phrase on any site and a translate button appears next to it. The free version translates on your own machine using the translator built into Chrome, so the text never goes over the network. Whole-page translation is part of Pro.

Chrome extensions install on desktop only. Open this page in desktop Chrome, or keep the link for later.
This is the extension. Click the input box to walk through it. This is a scripted demo: nothing is sent anywhere.
Three things: translate a selection in place, do it on your own machine, and translate the whole page with Pro.
Select text and a small round button appears beside it. Click it and the translation shows up in a card under your selection, without taking you off the page. You can turn the button off and use auto-translate after a short pause instead, or the Translate selection item in the right-click menu.
The free version runs on the translator built into Chrome, which arrived in Chrome 138. Chrome downloads the language pack once and keeps it locally, and the translation itself makes no network request at all. Until a Pro licence is activated, the extension does not contact the network for anything.
One button translates every visible piece of text on the page and swaps it in place, and Restore original puts the page back. Pro also covers language pairs Chrome has no model for, and the popup shows how much of your cloud allowance is left today.
Three steps: install the extension, select some text, click the translate button.
Installing from the Chrome Web Store takes a couple of seconds, with no account and no email. The icon lands to the right of the address bar, so pin it to keep the popup within reach.
A round translate button pops up next to your selection. Click it and the translation appears in a card directly below the text. The Translate selection item in the right-click menu does the same thing.
Set the language pair in the popup: by default the source language is detected for you. The popup also holds your recent translations, the settings, and the Translate whole page button for Pro.
On the free tier, nowhere. Translation happens inside your browser through Chrome built-in translator: Chrome downloads the language pack once, then translates locally with no network request. If your Chrome cannot provide the on-device translator, the extension says so rather than quietly sending your text to a server.
Cloud translation exists only in Pro. On that path the text goes over HTTPS to sovrest.com/api/translate together with the language codes and your licence token: either when on-device translation fails or has no model for the pair, or immediately if you switch on Prefer cloud translation in settings. Sovrest passes the text to Google Gemini through the OpenRouter, Inc. gateway and does not store it.
Whole-page translation is a Pro feature and follows the same rules, which means the visible text of the page can be sent to Sovrest servers. On-device is tried first, and whatever it cannot handle goes to the cloud. With Prefer cloud translation switched on, all of it goes to the cloud straight away.
Your translation history, up to 100 recent entries, lives in local browser storage, never leaves the device and is cleared with one button in the popup. There are no cookies, no analytics, no ad networks and no third-party SDKs.

Three plans: monthly, yearly and lifetime. All three unlock exactly the same features and differ only in duration and in how many devices can be active: 3, or 5 on lifetime. A licence keeps working for up to 14 days offline between checks, and the key is activated inside the extension popup.

On Pro, text reaches sovrest.com only on the cloud path: when on-device translation fails or has no model for the language pair, or straight away if you switch on Prefer cloud translation yourself. Whole-page translation is Pro too and follows the same rules, so in that mode the visible text of the page can be transmitted.
Sovrest forwards the text to Google Gemini through the OpenRouter, Inc. gateway purely to produce the translation, and does not store it. Page addresses and your browsing history are never sent, and page content is sent only when you start a whole-page translation on Pro.
Desktop Chrome 138 or newer. The extension installs from the Chrome Web Store, and free translation relies on the Translator API built into Chrome, which landed in version 138.
If your browser is older, or the on-device translator is unavailable for any other reason, the extension tells you and offers cloud translation instead of sending anything on its own. Chrome on phones does not support extensions at all.
There is no limit on how many translations you make: the free tier has no counter. The one real limit is about languages, because free covers the pairs your Chrome has an on-device model for.
Pairs Chrome cannot do, and whole-page translation, stay in Pro. The free popup also shows Sovrest promo cards, which Pro removes.
So the translate button can appear on the page where you selected the text. The extension puts a small script on pages: it reacts to your selection and to the button you press, and outside those actions it does not read or transmit page content.
If you would rather not have it on a particular site, add the domain to the excluded sites list in settings and it switches off there, subdomains included.
Chrome built-in translation takes the entire page, while this works on the part you selected. You highlight a phrase, click the button next to it, and read the translation in a card below the text without reloading the page or translating anything else.
The free tier uses the same engine underneath, so quality is the same. What is added on top is the language pair picker with auto-detect, a history of the last 100 translations, the right-click menu item, auto-translate after a pause and the excluded sites list. Pro then adds something Chrome has no answer for at all: cloud translation for the pairs it has no model for.
Because Chrome is downloading the language pack at that moment. The first translation of a new pair needs a local model, and the popup shows the download progress.
The pack is downloaded once and stays in the browser. After that, translations for that pair are immediate and need no connection.
Remove the extension from chrome://extensions, which deletes every local setting, the history and the licence data.
Pro is unlocked by a key rather than by an account inside the extension, so there is no cancel subscription button in it. You can deactivate the licence on a device to free up an activation slot, and for anything about a purchase or refund write to info@sovrest.com.
The free version costs nothing, needs no account, and translates on your own machine. Pro can come later: the key is activated inside the popup.
